About

I was born in 1962 in Hengelo and grew up in Boekelo. I studied Dutch Language and Literature in Groningen, learned to make radio there at the regional radio station Radio Noord, and taught for four years at the university's department of Dutch studies. My first published story appeared in the short-lived periodical Schrijver en Caravan. Passage published my first books.

From 2011, Thomas Rap published my books, and in November 2020 I signed my first contract with publisher Alfabet. In Germany, my books are published by mare, DuMont, Insel, Rowohlt and Knesebeck. In Italy by Iperborea. The English translations of Down Old Roads and Boundless River are published by MacLehose Press.

I made radio documentaries for Dutch broadcaster VPRO until October 2024, and I read audiobooks at the Thinium studios in Weesp.

I am married, I have three children, two grandchildren and one dog. I live in Amsterdam and on the island of Texel.
